Regulation basketball backboards have a width of 72” | 183 cm and a height of 42” | 110 cm with an inner rectangle that is 24” | 61 cm wide and 18” | 45.7 cm tall. One of the most important things you will need to consider is what size backboard you will need for your new basketball court. Backboard sizes vary in width from 48” wide all the way up to 72”, but for the sake of regular game play we recommend choosing backboard no smaller than 54” wide. Anything narrower than this measurement won’t allow the player to perform bank shots at all!

The standard dimensions for a basketball backboard are 72 inches wide by 42 inches high. Practicing with regulation backboards is the best way to gain experience, but for children that are just learning, a backboard that is 44 inches wide will be suitable.
Regulation basketball hoops are suspended 10’ | 3.05 m from the playing surface and have a standard rim diameter of 18” | 46 cm. The vertical backboard surface is made of plexiglass or tempered glass to prevent shattering and is sized at 42” x 72” | 110 x 183 cm. Basketball rims are manufactured from high tensile carbon steel to provide the ball with the correct amount of bounce while also having give for players that can dunk.
Basketball Backboard Dimensions The backboard itself is measure 6 feet by 3 and a half feet or otherwise know in inches as 72 inches by 42 inches. The top of the basketball backboard is thirteen feet. While the very bottom of the backboard is 9 feet 6 inches, six inches lower than the ten-foot rim.
To start off this section, we should note that a regulation backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches high. Most basketball systems, however, do not have this large of a backboard. There are a large number of mini basketball hoops available, which we will not consider.
